Know Before You Go
Weather in May
Cartagena in May is warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from 80-90°F (27-32°C). Expect occasional afternoon rain showers that pass quickly. The Caribbean breezes keep things comfortable, especially near the coast.
What to Pack
Light, breathable fabrics in natural fibers like linen and cotton. Don't forget sun protection (high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat), comfortable walking shoes for the cobblestone streets, and an umbrella or light rain jacket for those brief showers.
Currency & Payment
The local currency is the Colombian Peso (COP). It's helpful to keep cash on hand, so we recommend converting some USD to COP when you arrive at the Cartagena airport. You'll need cash for taxis and street vendors. Credit cards are accepted at major tourist spots and hotels.
Language
Spanish is the primary language, though English is commonly spoken at hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas in the Old City. A few basic Spanish phrases will go a long way and are always appreciated.
Safety & General Tips
Cartagena's Old City is very safe and walkable, especially in tourist areas. Use official taxis or ride-sharing apps, stay aware of your surroundings, and follow standard travel precautions. The city is known for its warmth and hospitality—enjoy it!
